- This episode is based on the JonBenét Ramsey case.
- This is the first part of a crossover episode with Homicide: Life on the Street which continued with the season 6 episode "Baby, It's You (2)".
- J.K. Simmons had appeared in the first two part crossover with Homicide: Life on the Street as Colonel Alexander Rausch in the Homicide episode "For God and Country". He did not appear in the Law & Order episode of that crossover, "Charm City". This time he appears as Emil Skoda in Law & Order, but does not appear on Homicide.
- Richard Belzer also appeared in The X-Files episode "Unusual Suspects" as John Munch (in a non-canon appearance) the week this episode and the second part of the crossover aired.
